A bad quarter for investment markets

Global investment markets have experienced their worst quarter of performance in four years.

At the end of September, stock markets had fallen by between 7% and 25% in the space of three months.

The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares was down by 7.04% and the Shanghai composite in China fell by 24.69%.

Investor confidence during the quarter had been hit by a triple whammy of factors; fears about the Greek bailout deal failing to come to fruition, worries about a hard economic landing in China and the threat of rising interest rates in the US.

Earlier this week I interviewed Dr Peter Westaway, Chief Economist for Vanguard Asset Management, about these three investor concerns, and also two others.

That interview will be featured within the Informed Choice Podcast tomorrow morning.
