How to delay dementia

I often poke fun at the Daily Express for their revolving front page headline system.

On any given day, they seem to write about pensions in crisis, wild weather, or dementia.

Today it was the turn of dementia and what is an excellent article describing the five steps people can take to delay the onset of the disease in later life.

As someone who recently discovered he has a greater genetic risk of developing late onset dementia, as a result of having two copies of the APOE ?4 gene variant, understanding the lifestyle changes I can make to the delay the onset of dementia and its severity is important.

The article described five lifestyle steps people can take – regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, keeping the mind active, watching your weight and getting regular health check-ups – all lifestyle factors which could reduce the chances of developing dementia.

Dementia is already a big issue in the UK, with 830,000 people currently living with dementia, forecast to rise to one million by 2025 as our population ages.

With no cure for dementia, and no immediate prospect for a cure to be developed, these lifestyle changes offer the best hope we have for delaying the onset of dementia and hopefully reducing its severity.
