The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares finished the week at 5,387.34, down 13.51 points or -0.25% on the day and down 141.87 points (-2.57%) over the week.

Global stock markets appeared to be entering a calmer period of trading ahead of the Christmas holidays, despite continued dire warnings about the eurozone debt crisis.

This week has seen a credit rating downgrade of seven major banks and warnings from IMF head Christine Lagarde about a gloomy economic outlook.

Over a year the FTSE 100 has fallen from 5,881.10, a fall of 493.76 points or -8.40%.

£1 is currently worth $1.55270 US or €1.19060 Euros.

Brent Crude Oil Futures is currently priced at $103.83/barrel. Gold is $1,594.00/ounce and Silver is $29.78/ounce.

The UK Bank Rate is 0.5% and CPI inflation was 4.8% for the year to November 2011.
