The defining disease of the ‘baby boomer’ generation?

With the first wave of the baby boomer generation turning 65 this year, a new report from the Alzheimer’s Association is drawing attention to the increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease that comes with older age.

Many baby boomers will spend their twilight years in retirement either with Alzheimer’s or having to care for someone who has the disease.

It is estimated that around 10 million members of the baby boomer generation will develop Alzheimer’s. This equates to around one in eight baby boomers.

With 10,000 baby boomers a day reaching their 65th birthday starting this year, Alzheimer’s could become the defining disease of this generation.

Alzheimer’s is a particularly cruel disease, stripping away an individual’s autonomy and independence before killing. While most people with Alzheimer’s survive for between four and six years with the disease, many can live for as long as 20 years.

The Alzheimer’s Association is drawing attention to the disease and funding research in America, whilst here in the UK the Alzheimer’s Society is doing similar work.
